Working with paints requires special care. There are therefore two typical areas of application for laser marking or laser engraving on paint: one is applying a marking to a paint layer without damaging it. Another application is the targeted removal of the paint layer with the laser.

The laser enables extremely precise removal of paint layers with an accuracy in the range of a few micrometers. The reliable repeatability of this precision performance and a short processing time make it the ideal choice for processing paints in series production.
In contrast to mechanical paint removal by milling or similar processes, laser engraving is not only wear-free and contactless, but also does not produce any dust that could settle on the workpieces. The removed material evaporates completely. This makes it suitable even for the most sensitive materials.

Classic areas of application for laser marking on paint are the electronics and automotive industries. In both industries, backlit buttons are primarily manufactured using laser processing (day-night design). This requires the paint to be removed precisely without burning the plastic underneath.

Frequently asked questions about laser marking of paints

On which materials can painted surfaces be processed with a laser?

The laser can be used to remove paint from all common materials (plastics, metals, wood, ceramics, glass, films, etc.). However, in the case of metals and wood, it should be noted that complete removal of the paint layer may also result in the loss of corrosion and weather protection in the affected areas. This problem can be easily remedied by subsequently applying a clear coat.

Is laser marking on paint also possible using color change?

Lasers can also be used to create markings in paint by means of color change. This process is particularly gentle, as it does not remove any material at all. However, in order for it to work reliably, the laser and its wavelength must be precisely matched to the paint to be marked.

What is paint?

Paint is a liquid or powder coating material that is applied thinly to objects and forms a cohesive film through chemical or physical processes (e.g., evaporation of the solvent). This usually results in a high-gloss surface. Paints are used to protect objects or to achieve a pleasing color effect.
