Solutions and Applications

Marking or engraving on foil and labels

Solutions from ACI Laser

Laser films are an alternative for materials that cannot be marked directly or can only be marked with difficulty. These engraving materials, such as ablation films, which have been specially developed for laser marking, consist of several layers: a backing material, a film with an adhesive layer, a contrast color layer and a topcoat layer.

How does laser marking of films work?

The laser beam first removes the top color layer, revealing the contrasting color layer beneath. In a second step, the laser system can cut through the entire film. This allows any 2D shape to be reproduced as a label. After processing, the finished label can be easily peeled off the backing material.

Color-shifting films as an alternative labeling method

Unlike ablation films, color-shift films have a transparent laminate layer. This prevents gases and dust from escaping during laser marking. The marking takes place beneath the laminate layer and is just as high-contrast as with ablation films.

Efficient laser marking on laser foils and labels

Label and cut film in a single step

In many cases, marking films offers an alternative to direct laser marking of a product when the latter is not possible for technical or logistical reasons. This ensures full flexibility in the marking process.
The laser’s ability to interact with the material at varying intensities allows for both marking and cutting the film in a single step.
Separate die-cutting is no longer necessary.

Laser Software for Designing Your Labels

To make designing your labels as easy as possible, we offer our in-house software, Magic Mark, a comprehensive solution that allows you to complete every step of the laser marking process on a single PC. In addition to controlling the laser station and managing all laser parameters, you can also design your own graphics or import templates in various formats.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Film Marking

Where are laser films used?

Laser films are widely used as industrial-grade information carriers . They have become indispensable, especially in automotive technology. Due to the enormous volume of individual products, a process had to be developed that allows these films to be labeled with high contrast in short cycle times with high contrast. The broad product and service portfolio of ACI Laser GmbH leaves nothing to be desired.

Which films are suitable for laser marking?

In principle, ablation films as well as color-change films are used for labeling films with lasers. These are available in many different versions for a wide range of applications from simple barcode labels to UV-, weather-, and saltwater-resistant stickers for offshore containers.

What kinds of designs can be created on film using a laser?

Using a laser, letters, numbers, symbols, and all types of two-dimensional graphics can be created. This naturally also includes 1D and 2D codes such as bar, QR and DataMatrix codes. The templates required for this can be conveniently imported and edited using our laser software MagicMark, or created completely from scratch.
